On the occasion of the Constitution Day of Norway, the Ambassador of Norway H.E. Mr. Kjetil Paulsen and Madame Pia Gjermundsen invited special guests to a reception at the Sheraton Grand Sukhumvit Hotel 18 May.

At the reception, Ambassador Paulsen held a speech emphasizing Norway’s strong traditions for democracy, freedom of expression and freedom of assembly. He also expressed his gratitude for the strong and long-lasting diplomatic bonds between Norway and Thailand, that were establised only few months after Norway’s independence in 1905. The speech ended with the playing of the Thai King’s Anthem and the Norwegian national song “Ja, vi elsker”.

Norway celebrates its Constitution Day on 17 May every year, marking the anniversary of the signing of the constitution at Eidsvoll in 1814. The Constitution Day is referred to as “syttende mai”, or “seventeenth of May”, among Norwegians.

“Syttende mai” is celebrated widely, both in Norway and all over the world. Children’s parades, national costumes, flags, marching bands and singing are key elements to be found in every celebration of the National Day, also in Bangkok.
