International Democracy Day

The promotion of human rights and democratic principles is at the heart of Norwegian foreign policy. This policy is implemented both in international forums such as the UN, the OSCE and the Council of Europe, and at country level.

Good governance and the rule of law are prerequisites for development, economic growth and innovation, and are essential for people to be able to control and shape their own destiny.

Lack of democracy, lack of respect for the rights of the individual and the rights of minorities, are drivers of many of the crises unfolding before us.

The theme for this year's International Day of Democracy is:

"Democracy under Strain: Solutions for a Changing World"
