Troika Statement on Violence in North Darfur 16 July

The Troika countries (United Kingdom, United States and Norway) are distressed by the recent violence in North Darfur. The July 13 attack on Fata Bornu left at least nine civilians- young and old- dead. This tragedy underscores the need for sustained commitment to protecting civilians. We appreciate UNAMID's action to respond and to help evacuate the injured. We call for an investigation into this attack and the factors that led to the local authorities’ inability to prevent it. These attacks and others that indiscriminately target peaceful protesters underline the need for urgent progress toward achieving freedom, peace and justice and to respond to the local demands across the country calling for accountability, protection, representation and development. The Troika stands ready to support the civilian-led transitional government as it endeavors to provide security to the people of Sudan.
