  • What: Annapurna Hotel

Women’s political participation is a critical component of democratic dialogue and social cohesion, and women’s contribution to central decision-making processes is essential for meaningful governance of Nepal. It has been widely experienced that governance structures that do not provide for adequate participation of women often suffer from state interventions that are neither inclusive nor democratic.

In light of the upcoming local elections, there is now a critical opportunity to include women in Nepal’s future governance structures. The issue for policymakers promoting gender equality now is how to overcome the political and social challenges to women’s greater equality, and how to use the momentum of transition to strengthen the equal rights of women.

Using the political momentum offered by the up-coming local elections, the Royal Norwegian Embassy is organising a Nordic Talk titled ‘Women in Transition: Participation in Times of Change’ which will look at the experiences from the Nordic Model, and discuss how these can contribute to ensure the equal participation and representation of women in a democratic Nepal. The discussion will particularly focus on women’s participation at the political level and in the bureaucracy, as well as the role that can be played by development actors to this end.

The event will host a panel inclusive of:

Ms. Tone Skogen, State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Norway)

Ms. Ila Sharma, Election Commissioner of Nepal

Ms. Wenny Kusuma, Country Representative UN Women

Ms. Bharati Silwal - Giri, Women’s Rights Activist

The event will be moderated by Mr. Ashutosh Tiwari, (CEO – Nepal), Sherpa Adventure Gear.
