More about the event & Magnus Carlsen
The set up will be a “Clock-simul.” This means that Magnus will play 15 players simultaneously, and all players will have 30 minutes on their clocks. Not only will the World Champion have to remember all the positions, he also needs to control all the clocks. Every time a move has been made on a board, the clock will count down for Magnus until he makes his next move on the same board. And, when you are out of time, you have lost the game.
Why join and why chess? Magnus Carlsen’s mission is to use chess as fun tool to make the world a smarter place. Chess is thought to improve academic and cognitive skills, and we believe getting people to play chess is a valuable way to achieve SDG4 - education for all.
Magnus Carlsen (27) is the reigning World Chess Champion and the number 1 ranked player in the world. He’s also the highest rated player of all time. Magnus Carlsen has been World Champion since he won against the Indian Grandmaster Vishy Anand in 2013. In 2016, he defended his title right here in New York, when the Russian Grandmaster Sergey Karyakin challenged him. This fall, he will be challenged again, this time by the American Grandmaster Fabino Caruano.
