Supporting the Review of SDG7

Tuesday 18, 10:30 AM in Conference Room 5, UNHQ.

High-Level Briefing to Member States and Launch of Policy Briefs on SDG7 and its interlinkages with other SDGs hosted by the Group of Friends of Sustainable Energy and UN-DESA.

Energy is inextricably interlinked to many SDGs, including poverty eradication, food security, clean water and sanitation, health, education, prosperity, jobs creation, and the empowerment of youth and women. Access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all is fundamental to human development. A shift toward sustainable energy solutions is also essential to the achievement of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

The UN High-Level Political Forum in 2018, with SDG7 on energy in focus, will serve as a first critical milestone to review global progress of SDG7 toward 2030.  To support this process, DESA, ESCAP and the Government of Thailand jointly convened a Global SDG7 Conference in Bangkok from 21-23 February 2018, to prepare substantive input for SDG7 review at HLPF in 2018.  A series of Policy Briefs on SDG7 and its interlinkages with other SDGs have also been compiled by the multi-stakeholder SDG7 Technical Advisory Group, composed of experts from governments, UN organisations, International Organisations and other stakeholders convened by DESA. This briefing will serve as a global platform to launch the Policy Briefs, along with Summary for Policy Makers.
