Shattering the glass ceiling: increasing women’s meaningful participation in peacekeeping – why and how?

The Permanent Missions of Indonesia, Norway and Rwanda are pleased to invite you to a Seminar on increasing women’s meaningful participation in peacekeeping. Kindly RSVP by clicking HERE

In order to improve peacekeeping, we need more women serving in greater numbers and at all levels of UN peacekeeping missions. Being fit for purpose also means putting women at the forefront of our peacekeeping efforts. On the field, women peacekeepers help missions build stronger relationships with communities, gain more access to information than all-male contingents can deliver, embed a gender perspective across all components and operations of a mission and facilitate a cultural change that reduces the cases of sexual harassment and sexual exploitation and abuse.

Back home, women peacekeepers serve as role models, inspiring women to follow in their footsteps. Moreover, now is the time to hone in on our national efforts to guarantee that we can increase the participation of women in UN peacekeeping missions.

The aim of the seminar is to showcase the steps Indonesia, Norway and Rwanda have taken and continue to take to recruit more women to their respective armed forces and police force and subsequently, to train and nominate to UN peacekeeping missions. The hope is that our efforts and lessons learned can be helpful to others as we all strive to meet the goals of 15% female staff officers and military observers and 20% female police officers by the end of 2018.
