The Missions of Nepal, Rwanda and Norway together with the UN Department of Peace Operations invite all attending Ministers and Permanent Representatives to a High-Level breakfast seminar on
The Conflict-Related Sexual Violence Mandate in Peace Operations:
Mission Coordination and Engagement with Parties to Conflict
The meeting will be moderated by Norway’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ms. Ine Eriksen Søreide.
When: Tuesday 29 October at 08:00 – 09:30 AM.
Where: Norway’s Mission to the UN, One Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza, 35th floor.
Today’s armed conflicts increasingly expose civilians to extreme violence, exacerbated by non-State armed groups as well as State armed forces. Civilians are caught on the frontline of conflicts in countries including Afghanistan, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Mali, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan (Darfur), where one of the most devastating forms of hostilities waged against civilians is Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (CRSV). Emphasizing the grave consequences of CRSV, seven out of nine UN Security Council Resolutions under the Women, Peace and Security agenda consider sexual violence as a major impediment to international peace and security.
The seminar will discuss the operationalization of the CRSV mandate in UN Peace Operations with a particular focus on coordination in the implementation of the CRSV mandate in peacekeeping contexts, as well as engagement with parties to conflict.
