The Norwegian Embassy in Lilongwe was established in 1999, and Malawi is today among Norway’s main development partners. The Embassy is responsible for handling official and diplomatic relations between the two countries, managing an extensive development cooperation portfolio, promoting Norwegian interests, assisting Nordic citizens as well as handling immigration affairs by servicing visa-applications for 16 Schengen-countries.
Norway has actively been supporting Malawi’s development efforts over the past 16 years, and will continue to do so. In 2014, the Government of Norway defined Malawi as a focal country for long-term development cooperation. This means that Norway will base its support on Malawian priorities and systems and increase its efforts to assist Malawi in becoming less dependent on donor financing. The Embassy supports activities to promote sustainable development, particularly in the fields of health, education, agriculture and governance. Private sector engagement is also given increased priority.
