Visit to eastern Kosovo

February 16th The Norwegian Ambassador in Pristina, Mr. Per Strand Sjaastad and CEO of KLGI (Kosovo Local Government Institute), Mr. Besnik Tahiri, visited the Gjilan region. The visit included both the original municipalities and the new municipalities founded after the decentralization processes in the region.

The purpose of the visit was to see the progress in the various municipalities, as well as the challenges they face. At the same time, the ambassador could see the positive effects of the different programs that the embassy supports such as the education program "Local Government Academy" and program for strengthening municipalities' "LGA-Empower".  Of special importance was the cooperation between the various municipalities, including matters relating to sustainable economic development, financial capability and operational efficiency.

The visit began in Gjilan where they were greeted by the Mayor, Mr. Lutfi Haziri, and learned more about the development of the municipality. The Mayor thanked for the support of the Norwegian Embassy "towards the young men and women in the community. Norway's involvement is of great importance and they have a special role in our municipality. "


Mr. Sjaastad and Mr. Tahiri were also greeted by and representatives of the municipality Partesh which is part of the LGA. There they got an insight in the progress of new municipalities in Kosovo. The meetings continued in the municipality Kllokot and Mayor Srecko Spasic where they all see potential for economic development through the use of resources and cooperation with the private sector. In Viti they discussed with Mayor Sokol Haliti the projects that are already initiated, and different measures to insure economic development.

During the visit to Gjilan, it was established that Norway plays a special role and that the support on the local level is of great importance.
