Covid-19 and visa and residence permit applications

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic our ability to provide services for applicants who wish to apply for visas and residence permits has been affected. As changes can happen fast, we will update this article with relevant information regarding the application process for those who wish to submit their visa or residence permit applications in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia or Sudan.

The Norwegian Embassy in Nairobi is responsible for handling visa and residence permit applications for the following countries: Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Eritrea, Djibouti, and South Sudan. In Ethiopia, Sudan, the Seychelles and the Democratic Republic of Congo the Norwegian Embassy in Nairobi is responsible for handling residence permits only, as we have representation agreements in visa cases with other countries in these locations.

Kindly be informed that as a general rule, due to the travel restrictions that have entered into force as a result of the Covid-19 situation, most applicants will not be granted a Schengen visa to travel to Norway. For more information, please visit UDI's information page about the Corona situation.

Please note the following:
VFS Global: VFS' Visa Application Centers in Nairobi, Kampala, Dar es Salaam and Addis Ababa are open, but with reduced capacity. Please visit www.vfsglobal.com for more information and to make an appointment.

Interviews: To protect our staff and the applicants from the risk of contracting Covid-19, it is not possible for interviews to be conducted in Khartoum at this time. As soon as the situation changes we will start contacting applicants to make appointments for interviews. Interviews may be carried out in Nairobi, Kampala, Addis Ababa and Dar es Salaam.

DNA-tests: To protect our staff and the applicants from the risk of contracting Covid-19, it is not possible for the mission in Addis Ababa and Khartoum to collect DNA-samples at this time. As soon as the situation changes we will start contacting applicants to make appointments for DNA-testing. DNA-samples may be collected at our missions in Nairobi and Kampala.

Representation agreements: Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the representation agreements Norway has with Sweden in Addis Ababa and Khartoum, Belgium in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and France in the Seychelles have been temporarily suspended. As a result, applicants in Sudan, the Democtratic Republic of Congo and the Seychelles who wish to apply for a visa to Norway must now travel to the nearest VFS Visa Application Centre to submit their applications.

As a temporary arrangement since the representation agreement with Sweden has been suspended until further notice, applicants in Ethiopia who wish to apply for a visa to Norway, may from the 21st September 2020 submit their applications at the VFS Visa Application Center in Addis Ababa.
