The agricultural sector is the leading economic sector in Kenya, accounting for 22% of the GDP, and for more than 50% of Kenya’s exports. The sector provides more than 16% of the formal employment in the private sector. Agriculture is likely to represent ripe opportunities for Norwegian businesses, mainly within fisheries, poultry, dairy, beef and horticulture (flowers, vegetables & fruits).
The meeting which was targeted at the Norwegian businesses present in Kenya attracted key speakers from the Fresh Produce Exporters’ Association of Kenya (FPEAK) and Kenya Flower Council (KFC). YARA, East Africa Ltd, also made a business case presentation.
With the valuable information shared at the meeting, it is hoped that Norwegian businesses can take up opportunities that can further develop and strengthen the Kenyan agricultural value chain while simultaneously add value in Norway. There are plenty of opportunities in the agriculture sectors, e.g. investment in renewable energy to power the sector, provision of IT based information platforms, knowledge and technology transfer to enhance efficiencies in the sector, and investment in agri-business, which includes farming, production of farm inputs, processing and marketing.
The Norwegian Embassy and Innovation Norway will continue to arrange meetings that address business opportunities for Norwegian and Kenyan business actors.
