The infrastructure sector is an important sector in India with regards to the overall growth of the GDP. This is a capital-intensive sector in which the Government and the private sector are investing heavily. Recently an Infrastructure Conclave that took place in New Delhi, where road transport and highways, railways, renewable power, inland waterways, Sagarmala (a programme on port connectivity) and affordable housing were discussed.

There is a lot of thrust on the national highways in India. They account for only 2 percent of the overall roads network but share 40 percent of the traffic load. Tunneling is an essential part if the highways when it comes to difficult terrain. Mr. Asheesh Agarwal, Senior Market Advisor from the Commercial Section of the Norwegian Embassy and Innovation Norway spoke in a technical session of the conference. He elaborated on the Norwegian tunneling expertise, which drew interest from the infrastructure companies and defense industry.

There is an interest from the Indian Government’s side to explore the Norwegian tunneling sector and look for the possible areas of cooperation. Innovation Norway is helping them in this pursuit.

Lately there has been a lot of activity in the Indian Norwegian cooperation on tunnelling, which is reflected in our previous articles on the topic as well.
