5th Conference on Science and Geopolitics of Himalaya, Arctic & Antarctic
On 26-27 February, the Embassy took part in SAGHAA (Science and Geopolitics of Himalaya, Arctic & Antarctic), a platform for researchers, policy makers, academicians and technology providers to discuss issues related to polar areas, including the Himalayas. SAGHAA was organized by a Delhi-based think tank LIGHTS and co-sponsored by the Norwegian Embassy.
Delivering the keynote address at the event, Ambassador Nils Ragnar Kamsvåg said, “Norway has centuries of experience of resource management and sustainable business activity in the north and we intend to build on this”. Norway is strongly committed to developing the Arctic cooperation further, through the Arctic Council which provides a platform for addressing cross-border issues in the Arctic and has been instrumental in developing new knowledge on opportunities and challenges in the region.

Arctic provides home to a significant part of Norway’s population and offers diverse economic opportunities. Norway has developed its Arctic Policy to ensure peace, stability and predictability in the region; integrated, ecosystem-based management; international cooperation and international legal order; and a stronger basis for employment, value creation and welfare.
The focus of the event this year was technological innovations and research expeditions. Kongsberg Maritime AS, and Light Structures AS, leading Norwegian companies providing solutions for shipping, offshore and subsea, participated in the conference, in addition to the representatives from Norwegian Polar Institute and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
