India is hosting the World Environment Day 2018, and the event was kicked off at Versova beach in Mumbai. The Consulate General received a memento of felicitation for its efforts to beat plastic pollution.

The Versova Beach Cleanup-campaign is seen by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) as a model for people’s activism and involvement in environmental issues and fighting plastic pollution, and the UNEP Executive Director Erik Solheim participated together with 4000 volunteers and other dignitaries.

Schools, colleges, corporations and organizations that have supported and participated in the beach cleanup were honored. The Norwegian Consulate General received a memento of felicitation by Shri Gajanan Kirtikar, Maharashtra member of Lokh Sabha, appreciating the efforts to support the Versova Beach Cleanup-campaign and combat plastic pollution for the last two years.

Waste Management Cycles provided by the Plastic Association were inaugurated, as well as India’s first boats to help clean the creeks and the mangroves. For the first time in India, divers went to the ocean floor to collect marine debris.
