The visa section at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Addis Abeba is looking to hire a visa officer for a long-term temporary position from March 2018 until July 2019.

The Embassy in Addis Abeba has about 35 employees, and are covering a wide specter of areas in the political, developmental and business field, in addition to the consular and immigration work. The visa officer will be part of a team of three.

The Visa section of the Embassy is handling applications from Ethiopian, Eritrean and Somali applicants. The Embassy has outsourced the reception of applications to VFS, and most applicants will therefore submit their applications there, while the Embassy is following up through registrations, interviews, DNA-test and the issuing of visas. We are looking for a person who understands the requirement for confidentiality and discretion that the work requires.

The visa officer will mainly be working on general visa and family reunification cases, ID control, application registration, interviews and DNA tests together with colleagues in the visa section. He/she will be required to file and organize the applications and to follow up of incoming correspondence. He/she will also be required to show initiative to gain sufficient knowledge of the applicable legislation, internal clerical procedures and work instructions.

These different tasks need to be handled with care and accuracy. Experience with similar work, specifically interviews or interpreting, is an advantage.

  • Good oral communication and writing skills in English
  • Higher education (university level)
  • Experienced in computer handling
  • The ability to provide relevant information and service to clients
  • Timely processing and accurate entering of data in the different systems
  • Fluency in mainly Tigrinya, but also Somali, and experience in working with (or as) a translator is a clear advantage

We are looking for a colleague who is good in working in team, but is self-driven when it comes to performing her/his duties. He/she shows effort and initiative and is interested in learning. He/she knows how to perform good customer service and treat applicants of all backgrounds and origins with respect. He/she further is social and has good communicative skills, and is expected to be contributing in a positive way to the good working environment at the embassy.

The visa officer might also be required to perform other duties at the Embassy when needed.
