Parliamentary Visit

16-17 September, a delegation from the Norwegian Parliament Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence visited Ethiopia. During their stay in Addis Ababa, the committee participated in Ethiopia's forest restoration program and interacted with students at Goro Primary School. Meetings were moreover held with several key actors from the Ethiopian government and parliament, think tanks, opposing voices and Norwegian partner organizations.

Norway and Ethiopia have a long-standing partnership. Today, the collaboration between the two countries is focused on five areas:

  • Climate change and environment
  • Good governance and human rights
  • Education 
  • Humanitarian aid
  • Private sector

Foreign Minister Gedu Andarhachew recieved the Norwegian parliamentarians to discuss Ethiopia's regional peace initiatives, the ongoing reforms and multilateral cooperation.

The Standing Committee had a fruitful meeting with Norwegian NGOs and businesses, where they learned more about their operations and the framework conditions that govern their activities.

Goro Primary School
The parliamentarians also had the opprtunity to visit Goro Primary School, supported by Norway through the General Education Quality Improvement Project - Equity (GQUIP-E) program. Here, they met with students in the newly upgraded science laboratory.

World Agroforestry center ICRAF
ICRAF Central Tree Seed Centre is supported by Norway and plays a crucial role in Ethiopia's ambitous forest restoration plan. The quality of native tree seeds is here secured before they are distributed and planted throughout the country.

The parliamentarians also had time to enjoy a cup of traditional Ethiopian coffee.
