Private Public Partnership on Landscape Restoration and Management - The First Initiative in Ethiopia

The Sustainable Land Management Programme (SLMP) is the government flagship programme within the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Resources (MoANR). The World Bank (WB) second phase of Sustainable Land Management Project (SLMP II) is part of the SLMP of the government and has been implemented in six regions of the country namely Amarara, Benshangul Gumuz, Gambella, Oromia, SNNP and Tigray since 2013.

Objective of the project is reduce land degradation and improve land productivity in selected 135 watersheds in the six regions. In this respect, focuses of the project has been watershed and landscape management, institutional strengthening and rural land administration and certification. The project is a multi stakeholder project and financed by the WB, Royal Norwegian Embassy in Addis Ababa and GIZ.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed yesterday, 21 between MoALR – Dr. Kaba Urgessa, State Minister and Raya Brewery-BGI Ethiopia, Ato G/Selassie Sifer on Private Public Partnership (PPP) with an aim create partnership for sustainable management of natural resources in Enda-Mekhoni Woreda of Tigray region.

The partnership is envisaged to combine finance from the private sector (Raya Brewery-BGI Ethiopia) and technical resources from MoALR/SLMP and Mekelle University in order to implement scientific approaches in protection, restoration, and sustainable use and management of resources in the May-Muk watershed. Norwegian Embassy in Addis Ababa supports the PPP through its support on Institutional Cooperation Programme with Mekelle University. Experience with this partnership will serve as a basis for further upscaling of such partnerships elsewhere under the SLMP.
