Couples that stop living together, following a breakdown of marriage, may obtain a separation licence from their county governor's office.

If the couple have children together, who are under the age of 16, the couple must attend mediation meetings during their period of separation.

Following a period of separation, a couple may get divorced. If the couple obtains a separation licence, a divorce may be filed and granted after one year. Without a separation licence, a divorce may be granted after at least two years of separation.

In Norway, divorces are granted by county governor offices.
