When someone dies, the estate of a deceased person is inherited by beneficiaries as stated in the deceased's will. The estate is what the deceased person owned. Beneficiaries can be family members, friends, specified organizations, etc. In Norway, if there is no will, the Inheritance Act regulates how the estate should be administered.

As of 1 July 2009, cohabitants with joint children get a limited right to possession of estate and a limited right to inheritance. To be in possession of an estate means that the surviving part gets a partial right of use of assets, such as common house and household effects.
